Anti-Nature Display Wednesday

Man – it’s Wednesday already?!?

Last year we stopped by the beach in Carlsbad, CA after a LegoLand trip. I was struck by the number of large, in-tact shells all over the place, so when we were in town last Sunday, I was anxious to go again & collect some nice pieces for the studio.

This year the beach was… not so good. I was amazed by the amount of small bits of plastic littering the shoreline. Specks of color and old balloons mixed in with all the seaweed. It was nasty.

So, in honor of the beautiful beach I admired last year, here is my anti-nature display for this week:

Tangled balloon string (thank goodness an animal didn't eat this!), misc plastic, chz-n-crackers stick, cigar thingy, etc. There was more, but I dumped it 😛

Nature Display Wednesday

Avery & I have a “nature display” in the living room where we collect different interesting objects we find on walks. This week we stopped at the beach for a little bit and also the park. Here’s what we collected:

Crow feathers, misc shells, sea weed... We also found an animal tooth but somehow I lost it! Good going Mom 😛

Chore Jar

My husband & I have decided it’s time for Avery to start doing chores so he can grasp the value of money and understand that if you really want something, you need to earn the money to buy it. Lately, Avery’s had a few Varuca Salt moments, so yeah, it’s time…

chore jar robotDuring Open Studio time last week, I gave Avery a glass jar and told him he could decorate it however he liked. He went to town and made a cool little robot guy.

Avery can earn beads to place in his jar by doing chores off of his special chore chart I made him. Since he can’t read, I drew pictures of the jobs he can do to earn the beads (clean up his toys, water the plants, etc). He will earn a reward when the jar is half full and when it’s completely full he will get the “Whip-it Stick-it” toy he’s been wanting ($20).

It’s his choice whether or not to do any chores at all. The point is, we’re trying to get him to learn that if he wants something bad enough, he has to work for it. We’d like him to understand how much it costs to buy some of the things he wants and how long it takes to earn enough to take it home.

I remember my first purchase. It was a 110 camera from Kmart for $13. I was extremely proud of myself and since then I’ve always been really good at saving money.  Hoping my little 4 year old will be motivated to fill that jar!

If you would like to make a chore jar when you come in for Open Studio, just let me know and I'll give you jar to decorate 🙂

Avery started a science class through LB Parks & Rec on Monday. He kept asking me when they were going to do science & said it was boring, but after class he said he liked it. There wasn’t much instruction this time. The teacher tried her best to stay perky although she was losing her voice. Hopefully it will be more fun & science oriented next week.

Sooo, I can’t help but compare the overall quality of the class to what we offer here at Averyboo Arts. Some of my customers have been trying to get friends to come take a class here, but some commented that they can do similar classes through the parks for the same price or a little less. So, let’s compare….

Would you rather your child take a class here:

or at Averyboo Arts?

June 1st – 5th

Here are some things we did in the studio last week….

Fun at Averyboo Arts

1. The students in ‘Techniques Class’ finished up their Assemblage Sculptures. There are 5 boys in class right now, so that’s been fun.

2. The bonus activity during Open Studio this week was Shoe Painting.

3. After the sculptures were dry, I hung them up as the art for First Fridays. Come on by – They look fantastic!
