Keeping Kids Busy – Shaving Cream

If you have a sliding glass door or a low window your child can reach from outside, then this activity may give you a few peaceful moments to yourself…

You will need:
———————
– A can of  99-cent-store shaving cream
NOTE: If your child is still putting everything in his or her mouth, you can substitute for canned whipped cream.
– A silicone spatula, a paint brush & any other tools that won’t scratch the glass
– Your kid outside in messy clothes

Averyboo Arts, Natalie Meza
If your child is strong enough, let them go ahead and spray cream onto the window. Remember, the point is to keep your child busy for a little bit, so don’t jump in to rescue them & spray out all the cream – that could cost you 10-15 minutes of free time…

Averyboo Arts, Natalie Meza
Let your child fiddle with the can for a while on their own. If your child is frustrated then of course, give them some help & spray a few globs around the window.

Next, let your child have at it.
Don’t be afraid of the shaving cream… it will all wash off.
They can spread the cream with their hands or tools. They can pretend to paint, draw, cook, slay dragons, whatever they like. If you’re lucky, you’ll get at least 20 minutes out of this activity.

When your child is all finished, give them a hose and tell them you need a fireman to help clean the window and, BAM, you’ve just squeezed another 10 minutes out of this activity.

Simple but fun. Enjoy.

Pee Wee Art – Roy Lichtenstein

class: Pee Wee Art (Age 2-3)

Every few weeks I like to use a Historical artist as inspiration for class — even for our littlest students! This was a fun class inspired by Roy Lichtenstein who’s famous for his use of bold shapes, primary colors, benday dots and speech bubbles!

The kids got to choose from a variety of pre-cut pieces of colored & benday papers. Using a brush-on glue they pasted it all together.

Once the child was happy with their collage they were given the option to add a speech bubble. Of course everyone wanted to add one and the grownups were happy to help document what their little artist had to say about their work. Here’s a sampling….

I realize there are people who think you should never write on a child’s work, and we usually don’t, but this was intended as a fun, interactive exercise using elements from Roy Lichtenstein’s art.  If you’re in Long Beach, we’ve added a morning Tuesday class to the schedule just for the Summer. Next one starts 7/10 – check it out!

Pee Wee Art is an art experience class for kids 2-3 years old and their favorite adult. See website for schedule of classes 🙂

Abstract Rainbows – St. Patrick’s Day

I’ve seen A LOT of rainbows since opening Averyboo Arts. It’s the #1 subject that children like to make when they come into the studio; and with good reason – they’re so happy and colorful 🙂

For St. Patrick’s Day I decided to introduce the Little Picasso students (age 4-6) to “abstract rainbows”. I wanted to show them that rainbows don’t always have to be depicted with 6-7 bands of color spanning over a house and a flower (although there’s nothing wrong with that). Abstract rainbows can be found all around from oil slicks to paint splatter.

Little Picasso’s – tape resist, abstract rainbows

Averyboo Arts

(1) lay down 3-4 pieces of painter's tape across a piece of tagboard. (2) Use a variety of drawing tools in "rainbow colors" to fill in the shapes created by the tape. Encourage kids to "overlap" & use 6 colors in each space. (3) Save one space to be painted with gold acrylic paint, sprinkle with gold glitter. (4) Carefully remove tape. (btw - it looks like a black pencil slipped by me while setting up, drats.)

(Age 2-3)

The littlest artist got to have some St. Patty fun too…

Color Mixing...kids mixed green on their papers then stenciled a shamrock on top. Fascinated by the process & the different shades of green.

With a little help from Mom, our creative tots tried their hand at abstract rainbows also (substitute gold acrylic paint for glue & glitter).

Open Studio (age 2-8) available W/F/SAT
One of our regular students came in during Open Studio to make a rainbow painting. I set her up with a canvas board and some acrylic paints ….

Our morning Pee Wee Art Class (Age 2-3) will be starting up again on Tuesday Nov 1st, 10-10:45am. You can register online or call 562-912-4800.

Here is a Gustav Klimt theme we did a few weeks ago in Pee Wee… The projects focus on process, while exposing children to art history, shape/form/texture and harmonious colors.
